Brazil has the world's largest population of Catholics, but the Church is losing followers fast. In 1994, three quarters of Brazilians described themselves as Catholic; now a little over half do. Many of those former Catholics now worship as Evangelicals. And the newly powerful faith, with its strong opposition to gay rights and abortion, is increasingly prominent in Brazil 's politics.
