French bakers like to say 'a meal without bread is like life without love'. And the recent annual Fête du Pain (bread festival) is all about making that love grow - and keeping a market worth 8.5 billion euros annually, alive. This year's event gave pride of place to women in the bakery business. Half the 160,000 people working in the sector are indeed women, but the vast majority sell bread, they don't make it.
