Paris police find three-metre snake in Seine

A three-metre-long dead snake has been fished out of the River Seine by Paris river police. They say it was probably dumped by a pet owner whose home could no longer accommodate the beast.

The snake, three metres long and weighing 40 kilogrammes, was badly decomposed but was probably a python, police said Wednesday.

The discovery highlights a growing problem, Paris police say. Exotic pets have become easily available to urban dwellers, who often buy them young and do not know what to do with them when they reach full size.

The snake was almost certainly dumped in the river by a Parisian who did not have room for a full-grown python in his or her home.

“Mature reflection and proper knowledge of these animals are necessary before buying them,” police warn.
