Chelsea's Mourinho under fire after string of defeats

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is facing down the worst crisis of his career, the British press reported on Wednesday, after the Blues boss failed to see his team through penalty shootouts to Stoke City in the League Cup on Tuesday. This latest setback follows a string of disappointing matches.

"Mourinho clinging by a thread," British daily The Sun splashed on its sports' page on Wednesday morning, prompting a flood of damning headlines all with the same question: how long will the Portugueuse boss, who calls himself "the special one", last?

Mourinho's failure to secure a Chelsea victory against Stoke City in the League Cup on Tuesday, has opened flood gates of criticism and speculation about his future. Critics suggest he could be days from losing his job unless Chelsea turns around its fortunes.

The defending champions are currently at 15th place in the premier league tables, having failed to win any of their last matches.

Last weekend, the Blues were held to a drawless match by FC Dynamo Kiev. Though, the Ukrainian club won't be celebrating for too long. They've just been slapped a criminal investigation by UEFA for racism.

TV footage purporting to show black fans being attacked by Kiev fans was handed to the football association by rights group Fare.

Mourinho's woes aren't that serious of course. However, the 'special one' seems to be unable to shake off a so-called 'third-season curse,' which has dogged him throughout his career.

The emabattled Chelsea manager has never worked at a club for four full seasons, as his performances tend to wane by the second campaign.

Mourinho has hit back at critics insisting his players "tried everything to win."

They'll have to try harder when they face Liverpool this weekend. Unless they secure a victory, Mourinho could very well be given his marching orders, and confirm rumours that his two-year contract is 'all but over'.
