Organisers of the world-famous event confirmed that the film star had agreed to launch the extravaganza.

"Eager for him to share the legend of this race," wrote Pierre Fillon, president of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which has overseen the race since its inaguration in 1923.

Last year president François Holland waved the starting flag and Pitt follows in the footsteps of film world figures such as Alain Delon in 1996 and Luc Besson in 2002, who brandished the flag at the start of the endurance race.
