Rogers, Ramos-Vinolas reach first Grand Slam quarter-finals

Garbine Muguruza reached the women’s quarter finals of the French Open after beating former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-4. The 22-year-old fourth seed will next play 108th seed Shelby Rogers who defeated 25th seed Irina Camelia-Begu in straight sets.

Muguruza, who was a runner-up to Serena Williams at Wimbledon last year, didn’t give any chance to the two time grand slam winner Kuznetsova as she broke the latter’s serve in the eighth game of the first set to lead 5-3.

She held her serve comfortably to win the set in 46 minutes.

The Spaniard maintained the pressure in the second set and broke Kuznetsova's serve twice at the start. However, Kuznetsova broke back twice to level the score 4-4 in the second. However, the Russian couldn’t do enough as Muguruza won the next two games to march into quarter final.

In the other fourth round match, Rogers became just the ninth woman outside of the top 100 to make the last eight in Paris since 1983.

“It's incredible and I'm really happy that it didn't start raining,” said Rogers.

“I always dreamed of this when I was a little girl in Charleston but never really thought I would reach the quarter-finals in Paris.”

Rogers has now beaten three seeds in her run at Roland Garros having seen off 17th seed Karolina Pliskova in the first round and 10th seed Petra Kvitova in the last 32.

In the men’s category, Spanish left-hander Albert Ramos-Vinolas reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final after brushing aside the challenge of eighth seed Milos Raonic in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-4.

The 28-year-old had never got beyond the second round of any Grand Slam and had failed to win a match at the tournament since 2011.

Ramos-Vilonas will now face defending champion Stan Wawrinka who beat Victor Troicki 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (7/9), 6-3, 6-2.
