Peace talks between Philippines government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front

Issued on:

The European Union has welcomed a peace plan between the Philippines government and the country's biggest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The agreement provides for a new semi-autonomous Muslim area in the resource-rich southern Philippine region of Mindanao. Fighting has been sporadic in recent years, but in the 1970s an all-out war raged. RFI spoke to Steven Rood, Asia Foundation's country representative for the Philippines, who was present at the peace talks in Malaysia.
